Six more weeks of winter, or an early spring? I am ready for the groundhog to predict an early spring! Whatever the little critter predicts, Groundhog Day is a fun holiday to celebrate!
I live in Pennsylvania, the home of Punxsutawney Phil, so I am always looking for the best Groundhog Day books and activities. Get ready to have some fun with your students and celebrate this unique winter holiday!
Every holiday celebration deserves some special books! I am always trying to squeeze in as many books as I can. These are just a few of my favorite books for Groundhog Day.

There are so many Groundhog Day writing activities about the weather, so I wanted to do something different. I wanted our activity to be creative and fun! The kids loved brainstorming ideas and thinking about what a groundhog would dream of doing. We used the craft template to make our own groundhogs. Children love writing about Groundhog Day. You can use these vocabulary cards or word banks to help take the frustration out of writing for little ones. They are perfect for a setting up a writing center or creating an anchor chart for your classroom. By displaying these words, your students will feel more inspired and motivated to work on writing.
Who can find the groundhog? I love this hide and seek game, because I can change the words to match our current sight words. Adorable Groundhog Day interactive puppets? Yes, please! Kelly over at Typically Simple created this fun craft to show the groundhog popping up out of his burrow! I love how simple they are, using mostly materials you may already have in your classroom. Your students are sure to have a great time making the groundhog pop up and down after they complete this cute activity!
If your class loves music, check out Jack Hartmann and his Happy Groundhog Day song! They don’t need to learn any choreography, and the lyrics are full of fun facts! If you need some movement minutes, get ready to wiggle and learn at the same time!
