December is a magical month in a classroom! It is a season of excitement and anticipation! It is also a season of generosity and kindness. December is the perfect time for a Classroom Kindness Tree!
Classroom Kindness Tree
A Kindness Tree is one of my favorite classroom traditions! It’s easy to set up, and the children love it! You will appreciate how it encourages kindness and positive behavior in your classroom! Your tree will become more and more beautiful with every kind deed.
Here’s what you will need to get started:

I love the look of a fiber optic tree, but any small tree will work. Be sure to get shatterproof ornaments so you can avoid any accidents! You can even ask families to donate ornaments. It’s a fun way to include them in the project. If each child brings 1 or 2, you will have plenty for your tree!
How to use your Classroom Kindness Tree
December is magical, but it’s also VERY busy for teachers! The good news is that your Kindness Tree does not take a lot of time or energy!Â
- Start with an empty tree except for the tree topper
- When a student is caught being kind, he/she may choose an ornament to hang on the tree
- Students can nominate each other during a certain time of the day or you can choose children throughout the day
- Continue decorating your tree all month

More December Ideas
Another way to encourage positive behavior with your students are Christmas Classroom Chants. I took the tunes of popular holiday carols and made classroom chants for lining up and gathering!Â
It’s a fun way to help students manage all of the excitement they are feeling and channel it into a positive behavior in your classroom.Â
If you’re looking for some ideas for student gifts to put under the tree, I highly recommend classroom gifts. You can read all about them here.
I hope you have a magical month with your students, and these ideas make your management a little easier!
